Week 1: The Titanic - History, Innovation & Impact

Ice cube water play - “Splash!” “Cold!”

We kicked off our very first Hello Curio & Co. week with a theme that’s captured James’s imagination for years: The Titanic. With James still in school and me working part-time this week, we needed a topic that we could explore meaningfully from home in small pockets of time. The Titanic was the perfect blend of mystery, history, and hands-on potential.

James has long been fascinated by the Titanic and the "Midnight Zone"—that dark, mysterious place deep in the ocean where it now rests. Have you ever been woken up at 3am to discuss the midnight zone? I have. It’s a lot. So we leaned into his curiosity and made the week a mix of science, history, art, and sensory play.

What We Did:

  • Ice cube water play and ice painting outside (Juniper LOVED this part!)

  • We listened to Titanic-themed music, podcasts, and YouTube videos

  • We printed a map and drew the ship’s course across the Atlantic

  • Introduced Morse code and tried writing secret messages

  • Wrapped it up by making our own version of Waldorf Pudding — a mysterious treat said to be served on board the ship, and a fun "following directions" activity. There are so many versions of this recipe online: here, here, and here.

While James dove into thinking about how and why things went wrong—and how they might have gone differently—Juniper explored words like "cold," "wet," and "splash!" with her water play. We even danced around the house to the music from James Cameron’s film (throwback to my own elementary school days! IYKYK).

Our Learning Goals:

  • Encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and historical curiosity for James

  • Introduce rich sensory vocabulary for Juniper through hands-on play - we’re working on building physical stamina standing/walking as well as first words

If you'd like to follow along or adapt the week for your own family, here's the lesson launchpad we used. Feel free to tailor it to your child’s age, ability, or interests. And if you need help brainstorming ideas on how to accommodate, shoot me a DM on Instagram!—I'd love to help!
